Gilberton Borough Police Chief Mark Kessler’s suspension is up this week. I don’t know what the proceedings are but a decision must be reached as to his basic suitability as a public servant. There are two sides to this. Kessler has rabid support among his constituents. They say he is not a terrorist and that he is merely observing his 1st and 2nd Amendments rights simultaneously in making his videos which not only contain over-the-top and sometimes profane language but plenty of gun action to boot. His supporters may have a point but Suspended Chief also faces vehement opposition, a fact he is distinctly aware of.
With his typical flare for the dramatic, the Chief has produced, directed and acted in a new video — 10 minutes and 28 seconds in which he acts out his usual death scenario, complete with long pauses in which the viewer is left staring into a pleasant but nondescript nature scene.
The plot is simple. The chief is out there in his typical pastoral wilderness setting and this time he’s got a Kalashnikov — a real beauty, and he also has targets, two or three hideous clown faces, who represent alleged libtards Eric (The Vice-President of the Gilberton Borough Council is named Eric Boxer) and Danny (the President of the Borough Council is named Daniel Malloy). The video which goes on-and-on is basically an execution film. The Chief’s vocal technique is to spew out something nasty, regroup, and then spew out another nugget. It is horrifying and strangely fascinating. He is engorged with self-importance.
His basic message seems to be that libtards must die. A firm believer in the power of figurative language, the Chief wants libtard Eric to meet his “friend” which of course is the Kalashnikov. Eric has no choice in the matter. He’s just a grim clown face in the Chief’s control.
There is one scene in the video that stands out. This is after the Chief has done his usual turn and fire bit. Then he takes the time to aim carefully. The rifle is cradled on his shoulder and resting against his cheek cutting into it. The Chief’s face is pink, like a lamb chop. When the Chief aims and locks in on his target, he is transformed. Gone is the stilted somewhat unnatural vocal delivery and the forced bravado. Instead, we have the consummate marksman. The Chief fires. Pop. Then a quick volley. Pop pop pop. Then he changes up the rhythm. Again. It’s effortless. It is the ballet of death performed by Chief Kessler. With each shot, the Chief recoils slightly from the impact and that too is rhythmically perfect. The Chief is a Maestro; he is in his element. He would be perfect in a video game — the perfect assassin.
But this is no video game. Or is it? Will the Chief actually kill people if the Council votes against him and he doesn’t get his job back? Which I would think is a distinct possibility. Will he be able to distinguish between his cardboard video world with its herky-jerky yet deliberate movements and the real “non-virtual” world in which its not appropriate to shoot people even if you don’t like them or their ideas.
From a director’s standpoint, this film should have been cut to about 150 seconds. Pick up the pace, no dead space, just get on with it. But that’s not the Chief’s style. His hubris is off the charts and his sadistic side is plain to see. He drags outs the video to torture the viewer. And then in the end — of course — he blows Eric and Danny’s heads off.
